Keto Hot Chocolate

Keto Hot Chocolate

Some may call this a keto hot chocolate recipe, or keto hot cocoa, or even sugar-free hot chocolate… and it’s true. All of those names work for low carb hot chocolate. But you know what else does? Drinking. Chocolate. Because that’s really what we’re making here. Thick, luxurious, ultra-rich, and deep chocolate flavor. Those sugar-free hot chocolate mixes that come in a box? No thanks. This keto-friendly hot chocolate may be made without sugar, but it can’t even be compared to the boxed mixes!

This keto hot chocolate recipe was originally published in January 2016 and was republished in October 2019, with new tips and photos.

WHAT IS KETO HOT CHOCOLATE?

Keto friendly hot chocolate is simply hot chocolate that’s been keto-fied!

I took a traditionally-high-in-sugar drink and made it taste just as good, without any added sugar so that all of us – low carb and keto included – can enjoy a cup of it on a blistery day or as a luxurious finish to a dinner party or meal.

WHAT’S THE SECRET INGREDIENT FOR KETO HOT CHOCOLATE?

The secret ingredient in my keto hot chocolate recipe is real sugar-free chocolate! Cocoa powder is great, but melting actual chocolate into this sugar-free hot cocoa makes it so rich and well, chocolate-y.

This thick, fancy, sugar-free hot chocolate recipe is my recreation of Angelina’s, which is a world renowned cafe known for it’s amazing hot chocolate. This recipe will transport you to a cozy, warm Parisian cafe and you will feel at peace like never before.

And with only five ingredients, it’s incredibly simple to make. Just heat the almond milk, cream, and sweetener, then stir in the chocolate and vanilla until melted.

You’ll feel like you’re having a fancy, delectable dessert!

HOW TO MAKE KETO HOT CHOCOLATE

One of the best things about this low carb homemade hot chocolate is that even though it tastes super fancy, it’s relatively easy to make! A quick note about the ingredients:

  • The chocolate that you use to melt into this low carb hot chocolate recipe makes all the difference in taste. Choose a high quality chocolate bar and it will shine through here. It’s worth spending a little extra money!

  • Any sweetener you like will work here. Allulose is my favorite, but check my low carb sweetener guide for alternatives (and a conversion chart!). You can even omit the sweetener if you don’t want your hot chocolate too sweet.

Let me show you how to make low carb hot chocolate with heavy cream:

  • Heat milk and sweetener. In a small saucepan over medium heat, bring the almond milk, cream, and allulose to a gentle simmer and then remove from heat.

  • Add vanilla and chocolate. Stir in vanilla and chocolate while whisking constantly until melted. This is why it’s sometimes called keto drinking chocolate, we’re literally melting chocolate into cream.

  • Serve. Pour your creamy keto hot cocoa into espresso cups to serve.

CAN I DRINK HOT CHOCOLATE ON KETO?

Hot chocolate on keto… a common question! Most hot chocolates and drinking chocolates are made with milk, sugar, and chocolate – definitely not keto!

But this keto hot chocolate recipe utilizes sugar-free chocolate, a carb-free sweetener (I like allulose or erythritol!) and a combination of heavy cream and almond milk.

I happen to think that it’s the best sugar-free hot chocolate around!

And as for the carbs? Just 1 gram net carbs! It might just become your new favorite dessert.
